TEAM promises ward system for Vancouver by 2030

TEAM for a Livable Vancouver has announced a democratic reform plan headlined by a commitment to move Vancouver to a ward system in time for the 2030 civic election.

The plan, called A Stronger Voice for Neighbourhoods, was announced October 6. Under it, the mayor would continue to be elected citywide while councillors would be elected from geographic neighbourhood constituencies. The party says it would establish an independent Electoral Boundaries Commission to recommend ward boundaries with public input.

Vancouver is currently the only one of Canada’s ten largest municipalities without a ward system.

The plan also calls for neighbourhood councils to give residents an advisory role on local issues, improvements to the Van311 service request system including an escalation process for unresolved cases, and restoring the QuickFind directory of City staff.

No changes are proposed for Park Board commissioners or school trustees, who would continue to be elected at large.
