Langley City mayoral hopefuls split over $178M pool and arts centre plan

LANGLEY, B.C. - Langley City’s two mayoral hopefuls are split over a proposed pool and arts centre ahead of Saturday’s vote, offering voters a clear pocketbook contrast.

Incumbent Nathan Pachal backs continued planning for a year-round Al Anderson pool and a new arts centre at Timms, which could cost up to $178 million. Pachal says the city will chase every grant first before spending local tax dollars.

Challenger Delaney Mack opposes the projects, citing 38.5 per cent in tax hikes this term. Mack wants the money directed to policing and roads instead.

The two-way mayor’s race goes to voters on Saturday, October 17, alongside council and school trustee contests. Both candidates answered questions at a Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce forum, where the pool and arts centre dominated discussion.

The Al Anderson pool proposal would replace the aging outdoor pool with a year-round facility, while the Timms arts centre would give community groups a dedicated performance and gathering space. Pachal argues both are long-overdue investments in a growing city; Mack counters that households are already stretched by this term’s tax increases.

Langley City’s South Asian community is a growing voter bloc in the city.
