SURREY, B.C. - BC Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson launched an Anti-Extortion Action Plan in Surrey, pledging specialized investigators dedicated to extortion cases and clear reporting and protection pathways for businesses and families who are threatened.
Under the plan, victims would know exactly where to turn, and a dedicated repeat-offender court stream would see the most prolific offenders face swift consequences, according to the October 13 release. The party also promises strengthened bail and warrant enforcement and expanded electronic monitoring for those released into the community.
The measures build on the Conservatives’ plan to hire 1,000 additional police officers, prosecutors and support staff. Doerkson said the current bail system lets repeat and violent offenders walk back onto the streets, often within hours of being arrested.
“No business owner should have to choose between paying off criminals and keeping their family safe,” said Jessy Sahota, the Conservative candidate for Surrey-Serpentine, in the release. “Under the NDP, extortionists have been emboldened.”
Extortion has become a top safety concern for Surrey’s South Asian business owners, with threats and intimidation reported across the city. The release does not detail how the proposed extortion unit would differ from existing police anti-extortion efforts.
