Canada-India trade talks push forward ahead of Modi’s December visit: what it means for Surrey

SURREY, B.C. -

Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13, and the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity, according to a readout published by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The leaders said the agreement would support efforts to double two-way trade between Canada and India by 2030. They also welcomed the historic Team Canada Trade Mission currently taking place in India, led by International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, and a visit to New Delhi this week by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand to advance shared priorities including trade, energy and people-to-people ties.

The call comes as Canada-India engagement has increased over the past year in areas including finance, defence and security, people-to-people ties and artificial intelligence, the readout says. The two leaders also discussed geopolitical instability in the Indo-Pacific region and the need for trusted partners on energy and agriculture.

The leaders agreed to remain in close contact ahead of Modi’s visit to Canada in December. For Surrey’s large Indian diaspora, the readout signals continued momentum on the trade and immigration ties that connect families, students and businesses across both countries.
