Locke demands five Surrey commitments from provincial parties

SURREY, B.C. - Mayor Brenda Locke is calling on all provincial parties to make five specific commitments to Surrey, saying the city has been treated as “second to Vancouver” for too long.

The Surrey Connect leader listed the demands Thursday: build the second tower at Surrey Memorial Hospital, repeal Bills 44 and 47, legislate a Surrey Charter, complete an equity review of provincial funding for Surrey versus Vancouver, and reform Metro Vancouver.

“These commitments are vital to Surrey’s future and will ensure we have the services Surrey deserves as we become the largest city in British Columbia,” Locke said.

Locke also welcomed the BC Conservatives’ commitment Thursday to build a Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Surrey. Surrey Connect says it committed October 1 to provide city land to the province for the hospital, calling itself the only party to offer land for the project.

“Surrey Connect is calling on all parties to give Surrey the support it needs,” Locke added. “For too long, Surrey has been treated as second to Vancouver. It’s time we get the funding and resources we deserve.”

Locke is running for re-election as mayor of Surrey in the October 17 municipal election as the Surrey Connect candidate. She currently leads in polling.

This story is based on a Surrey Connect media release. Apna News has not independently verified the claims, including the October 1 land commitment. No response from other provincial parties was included in the release.
