Durga Utsav, also known as Durga Puja, is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar. It marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The festival is celebrated over nine nights and ten days, known as Navaratri, and is especially significant for Bengali, Assamese, Odia, and Maithil communities, while being observed by Hindus across India and the diaspora.

In 2026, the festival season falls in the third week of October, with Maha Navami on Oct. 19 and Vijayadashami, or Dussehra, on Oct. 20. Community organizations across Surrey, Delta, and the Lower Mainland are hosting pujas, cultural programs, and traditional feasts throughout the week.

The Delta celebration drew families from across the South Fraser region, including Surrey, Newton, and North Delta, home to some of the largest South Asian communities in British Columbia. Events like these bring together first-generation immigrants and Canadian-born youth, keeping cultural traditions alive far from home.

The consul general’s presence at the Delta event underscores the Indian consulate’s ongoing outreach to the diaspora in British Columbia. The Consulate General of India in Vancouver regularly attends cultural and religious celebrations across the province, from Vaisakhi nagar kirtans in Surrey to Diwali events in Vancouver, as part of its community engagement mandate.

For many attendees, seeing India’s official representative at a local festival is a point of pride. It signals that the traditions they carry from home are recognized and valued in their adopted country.

The visit also comes at a busy time for the consulate, which provides consular services including passports, visas, and Overseas Citizen of India cards to the large Indian-origin population in the Lower Mainland. Community events give consulate officials a chance to connect directly with residents outside formal office settings.

The consulate has made community visibility a priority in recent years, with its officials regularly attending events in Surrey, Delta, Abbotsford, and Burnaby. For local organizers, a visit from the consul general adds prestige to their celebrations and strengthens ties between the diaspora and the Indian mission.

Durga Utsav celebrations continue across the region through Oct. 20, when Dussehra will be marked with Ravan Dahan ceremonies, including at the Shri Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Surrey.
