NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. - TransLink will honour the service and sacrifice of veterans, active military members and other eligible personnel with free transit on Remembrance Day, Wednesday, November 11.
Eligible customers can travel free all day on bus and HandyDART, and on SkyTrain and SeaBus from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., TransLink said November 2. One accessible fare gate will remain open at all SkyTrain and SeaBus stations during those hours.
Those eligible include veterans, active members of the Canadian Armed Forces, police and fire personnel, Canadian Coast Guard members, officers from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and BC Ambulance Service personnel. They can ride free by presenting a badge, military identification or Veteran’s Service Card, or by wearing their uniform, with no need to tap a Compass Card.
TransLink also recognizes National Indigenous Veterans’ Day on November 8, paying tribute to Indigenous veterans and military members, past and present. The Royal Canadian Legion will be distributing poppies and accepting donations at select transit hubs across the region, and TransLink encourages customers attending Remembrance Day ceremonies to take transit.
For everyone else, Sunday and holiday fares and schedules will be in effect on November 11: a 1-Zone fare applies for travel across the transit system, and bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus run on Sunday and holiday schedules. The West Coast Express will not run, and the TransLink Customer Service Centre, Access Transit Customer Care Office and Lost Property Office will be closed.
At 11 a.m., TransLink will observe a system-wide moment of silence. Buses will stop at the nearest bus stop to observe it, and SkyTrain and SeaBus will also participate. Regular weekday service and fares resume November 12.
For Surrey riders, the free travel applies across the city’s bus network and at Surrey’s SkyTrain stations, including King George, Surrey Central, Gateway and Scott Road, making it easier for veterans and serving members in Newton, Fleetwood, Guildford and Cloverdale to reach Remembrance Day ceremonies across Metro Vancouver.
