SURREY, B.C. - Every year, Surrey parents of four-year-olds ask the same question in slightly different ways: is my child old enough for kindergarten this September, or do we wait a year? B.C.’s rule is a single date, and once you know it, the question answers itself.
The rule: five by December 31
A child can start kindergarten in September if they turn five by December 31 of that same year. There is no separate readiness test and no interview that overrides the date. Worked example from Surrey Schools’ own guidance: a child born in 2022 turns five during 2027, so they start kindergarten in the 2027-28 school year. A child born in January 2023 turns five in January 2028, which puts their start in September 2028. The December and January birthdays that feel a week apart land in different school years, and that is by design of the rule, not by anyone’s judgment of your child.
Why the date matters beyond kindergarten
That single cut-off sets the cohort your child moves with through elementary and secondary school: classmates, sports age groups and graduation year all flow from the September they start. It is also why “redshirting” questions, holding a December-born child back a year, are really questions about the same line: the rule sets when a child may start; families weigh readiness within the choice the dates give them, and schools are used to the conversation.
What it means for you
If your child turns five by December 31, 2027, plan on kindergarten in September 2027 and watch for Surrey Schools’ registration period for the 2027-28 year, with your child’s birth documentation and your proof of address in Surrey ready. If the birthday falls in the first days of January, your start is the following September, whatever the preschool friends are doing. When in doubt about a specific case, the district is the authority; its registration guidance uses exactly this December 31 test.
