Gurbux Saini is the newest federal face on this list. Elected on April 28, 2025 as the Liberal MP for Fleetwood Port Kells, he is serving his first term in the House of Commons.
His road to Ottawa was decades in the making. Saini arrived in Canada in 1970 with $8 to his name, worked as a lumber piler and rose to plant manager. In Williams Lake he served seven terms as city councillor, chairing the finance, public works, and parks and recreation committees, and spoke up for northern communities through the North Central Municipal Association. He later served on provincial boards, including the BC Liquor Appeal Board and the BC Tourist Advisory Commission, and received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Award. The federal record shows two earlier defeats before this win: in Cariboo Chilcotin in 1997 and in Cariboo Prince George in 2004.
Since moving to Fleetwood Port Kells in 2016, he has pushed local park improvements, from public washrooms and benches to plans for a walking track and community centre at Chimney Heights Park. In Parliament he now divides his time between the Human Resources, Skills and Social Development committee and the Natural Resources committee, after earlier stints on the Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics committee and the Library of Parliament committee.
His most notable move so far came in the fall of 2025, when he introduced Private Member's Bill C-226. The bill proposes a national framework on grocery pricing and unit price display practices, a direct response to the cost of living pressure his constituents talk about at the door.
For a first term MP, putting your name on legislation about grocery bills is a clear signal about whose problems you want to be associated with. The bill, short-titled the National Framework for Food Price Transparency Act, passed second reading on April 22, 2026 and is now being studied in committee. He is also a member of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Canada-United Kingdom Inter-Parliamentary Association.
