Few Surrey politicians have had a longer run in Ottawa than Sukh Dhaliwal. He currently chairs the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health, one of the most watched committees in Parliament, while also co-chairing the joint committee on the Library of Parliament and vice-chairing a special joint committee on powers under the Building Canada Act.

His parliamentary story has three chapters. He first entered the House in 2006 representing Newton North Delta, lost the seat in 2011, then fought his way back in 2015 for Surrey Newton. Voters have returned him in every election since: 2019, 2021 and again in April 2025, this time under the riding's new name, Surrey Newton. He has now won six federal elections in all, in 2006 and 2008 for Newton North Delta and in 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2025 for Surrey Newton.

Dhaliwal came to politics as a professional engineer, a Fellow of Engineers Canada, a land surveyor and a small business owner who co-founded a land surveying company in Surrey. Before public life he served on the Board of Directors of SEEDS, the Self Employment and Entrepreneur Development Society, sat on the City of Surrey Parks and Community Services Committee, and volunteered with the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation's Emergency Capital Campaign.

His committee record stretches across two decades. He chaired Citizenship and Immigration from 2023 to 2025 and the special committee on Afghanistan in 2021 and 2022. Earlier terms put him on International Trade, Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics. He also sits on the executive of the Canadian branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. Few MPs have moved across that many major files in one career.

That kind of longevity gives him deep roots in the community he represents. Newton is one of Surrey's most vibrant and fastest changing neighbourhoods, and Dhaliwal has been its federal voice, on and off, for nearly two decades.

One note to avoid confusion: he is the federal Liberal MP, a different person from Mandeep Dhaliwal, the provincial Conservative MLA for Surrey North. Same last name, different legislatures, different parties.
