Richmond: Transit Police issue $66,716 in distracted driving fines in one day

Transit Police handed out $66,716 in fines during a single eight-hour distracted driving blitz in Richmond last month.

On Tuesday, September 29, officers from the Metro Vancouver Transit Police Targeted Mobile Enforcement Team (TMET) set up below the Canada Line along No. 3 Road, joined by the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit. In eight hours, they issued 148 provincial violation tickets.

Of those, 106 were for using an electronic device while driving, 25 were for seatbelt violations, one was for driving without insurance, and 16 were for other Motor Vehicle Act offences. Volunteers from both agencies assisted officers, and other drivers received warnings and education about the dangers of distracted driving.

“Distracted driving is the second-leading contributing factor in all police-reported fatal crashes, following speeding,” said A/Sergeant Jazz Nijjar. “Decisions made behind the wheel can carry devastating, life-long consequences.”
