Vancouver police have handed out more than 1,275 warnings and tickets during a month-long e-scooter enforcement campaign.
The campaign runs from September 4 to October 4 and targets electric kick scooter regulations. Most interactions involved riders not wearing helmets, with 920 warnings and tickets issued (753 warnings, 167 tickets). At least 181 went to riders on sidewalks, 84 for riding double, and 24 for riders under the age of 16.
“E-scooters are a great mode of transportation, but we want people to know the rules and get to their destination safely,” said Insp. Stephanie Willoughby, who leads the initiative.
Key rules riders missed: helmets must be worn, e-scooters must be walked on sidewalks and across crosswalks, doubling is not allowed, riders must be at least 16, front and rear lights on between sunset and sunrise, ride in cycle lanes or on the far right of roads (not allowed on roads with speed limits above 50 km/h), and maximum speed 25 km/h.
Willoughby said the campaign was timed with the start of the school year after a summer that saw at least one person seriously injured and one fatality involving e-scooters.
