SURREY, B.C. - One of the world’s biggest AI companies opened its doors wider to young companies this month, and the rush was so strong that the doors have already closed again, at least for now. For Surrey founders building on AI, the useful move is to get in line early for the next round.
Claude Startups is Anthropic’s program for early-stage founders building on Claude, its family of AI models. According to Anthropic’s program page, interest in the program “has been far higher than we expected,” and the current cohort is now full. The company is not accepting new applications right now.
The demand is not hard to understand. Members get access to the Claude Startup Stack, a bundle of offers from companies building with Claude, with discounts and credits worth up to $45,000. The offers cover the tools a young company runs on, across sales, design, data, meetings and engineering, and members redeem each one with a code in the Claude Console.
Members also get direct time with the people who build Claude. Anthropic runs live group sessions with its Applied AI team every other week, in a webinar format that includes a question and answer session. The program adds invitations to Claude Startup events, hackathons and community meetups, including Founder House gatherings where builders meet in person.
There is a second door for companies with the right backers. Startups financed by a venture capital firm in Anthropic’s partner network may be eligible for up to $100,000 in additional API credits, claimed through their investor, the company says.
Anthropic is clear about one limit. Claude Startups credits apply to the first-party Claude API through the Claude Console only. They cannot be used on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure or other third-party platforms, so a company that runs Claude through a cloud provider cannot spend the credits there.
Founders who already applied and were still in review when the cohort filled will not move forward this round. Anthropic says it has emailed everyone affected and encourages them to apply again when applications open for the next cohort. The program itself continues for current members, with the Startup Stack, the biweekly Applied AI sessions and event invitations all still running.
For Surrey’s growing base of small technology companies and solo founders, many of them building services for local industries such as trucking, real estate and retail, the practical steps are simple. Anthropic tells founders to subscribe to the Claude Startup newsletter to hear when applications open for the next cohort, and to get founder stories and product news in the meantime. Building on Claude now, even at regular prices, also means a team already knows the tools if a place opens up.
Anthropic has not announced a date for the next cohort. What the full cohort does show is where the AI market’s energy is: thousands of small companies are betting that building on a frontier model is faster than building alone, and the model makers are competing to house them.
