Elections BC begins its final count today, November 6, 2026, the process that will decide the certified results of British Columbia’s October 24 provincial election, including the closest race in Surrey.

The final count runs November 6 to 10, 2026. It counts the mail-in and absentee ballots that were not counted on election night, and Elections BC runs additional integrity checks on those ballots to make sure only eligible voters vote, and that they vote only once. Results reported at the initial count are preliminary and subject to change while they are verified for accuracy and completeness.

Final results are not published until counting has finished at every location in the province. The official declaration of results follows on Return Day, November 18, 2026.

Surrey City Centre is Surrey’s closest race

Surrey City Centre is the closest of Surrey’s ten ridings. Elections BC’s results show Conservative Zeeshan Wahla with 6,384 votes and NDP incumbent Amna Shah with 6,003, a margin of 381 votes out of 13,502 valid votes. All 72 ballot boxes in the riding have reported.

The margin is wider than 100 votes, so Surrey City Centre does not trigger an automatic recount under Elections BC’s rules. The mail-in and absentee ballots counted this week can still move the margin, as they can in every riding.

Across British Columbia, ten of the 93 electoral districts ended election night with fewer than 500 votes between the first- and second-place candidates, according to Elections BC’s preliminary results. Ridings where the margin is 100 votes or fewer go to a full recount as part of the final count.

Two leads have now changed hands since election night. In Ladysmith-Oceanside, Elections BC now shows NDP candidate Stephanie Higginson ahead of Conservative Kris McNichol by 43 votes, 14,039 to 13,996, a reversal of the preliminary result. In Burnaby South-Metrotown, Conservative candidate David Xie now leads NDP candidate Paul Choi by 77 votes, 6,560 to 6,483.

What the final count shows so far

As of the final count in progress on November 7, 2026, the Conservative Party of BC leads in 64 of 93 ridings with 909,433 votes, or 47.96 per cent of the vote. The BC NDP leads in 27 ridings with 708,306 votes, or 37.35 per cent, and the BC Green Party leads in two ridings with 210,886 votes, or 11.12 per cent.

The Conservatives lead in all ten Surrey ridings on the preliminary count. Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson is the premier-elect, pending the certified results.

Surrey voters can follow the final count as it happens. Elections BC updates its results page as counting proceeds, and Apna News will report the certified Surrey results when the final count is complete.

What happens next

Counting continues through Tuesday, November 10, 2026. Once counting finishes at every location, Elections BC publishes the final results, and the winners are declared on Return Day, November 18, 2026.
