BURNABY, B.C. - With Halloween one day away, Burnaby RCMP are reminding everyone to make safety a priority, and say additional officers will be on patrol across the city on October 31 to respond to calls and support a safe celebration.

“Burnaby RCMP will have additional resources on patrol throughout the city this Halloween to respond to calls for service and support a safe celebration,” said Youth Liaison Officer Constable George Han. “If you’re planning to head out for Halloween, there are some safety tips to keep in mind to help ensure a fun, safe, and enjoyable evening for everyone.”

Road safety. Drivers should slow down and watch for additional pedestrians on the streets. Pedestrians are reminded to stop and check for vehicles when crossing the street, and to use crosswalks and marked intersections.

Planning your safe and scary look. Make sure costumes are visible in the dark: add reflective tape or reflective armbands to increase visibility. Flashlights and glow sticks make great costume accessories and help keep children visible to motorists.

Candy safety. Have an adult check all candy before it is eaten. When in doubt, throw it out.

Halloween parties. Plan a safe ride home: use a taxi, transit, a designated driver, or a ride-share service. Never drive impaired.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in their neighbourhood can contact the Burnaby RCMP non-emergency line at 604-646-9999 to make a report. In an emergency, always call 9-1-1.

For Surrey readers, the advice travels well across the municipal boundary: the same mix of excited children, dark costumes and busy streets will be out in Surrey on Halloween night, and the same habits, slowing down, staying visible and checking candy, are what keep the evening fun.
