DiwaliFest to host free “Diwali in Surrey” celebration at City Hall on Nov. 15

SURREY, B.C. – DiwaliFest will host “Diwali in Surrey” at Surrey City Hall on Sunday, November 15, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., with free admission through per-person pre-registration.

The event takes place at 13450 104 Ave. Organizers say every attendee must register in advance, with one registration per person.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists and marks the victory of light over darkness. In Surrey, the day of Diwali falls on November 8 this year, according to the City of Surrey.

The city reminds residents that fireworks are prohibited without federal certification and a Surrey Fire Service permit. Fines range from $400 to $50,000. Bylaw officers will be deployed for Halloween and Diwali, the city says.

Surrey is home to one of the largest South Asian communities in Canada, and Diwali celebrations in the city typically draw large crowds. Organizers have not yet announced expected attendance for this year’s event.

The November 15 DiwaliFest celebration is a separate community event from the November 8 holiday. Program details have not yet been released by organizers.

Apna News will publish a full Diwali weekend guide as the holiday approaches and update this article when organizers release program details.
