SURREY, B.C. -
BC NDP Leader David Eby says a re-elected NDP government would expand transit funding, including a $40 million per year funding boost to BC Transit to expand bus service and improve transit connections between communities.
Eby also promised rapid bus transit to better connect people and communities in Metro Vancouver, and a sustainable long-term revenue model developed in partnership with TransLink that would not raise costs for drivers. The announcement lands 9 days before the October 24 provincial vote, with Surrey-Langley SkyTrain commuters among those most directly affected.
The NDP points to its record on transit, including the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension, the Broadway Subway project, $312 million in funding to stabilize TransLink fares and services, and free transit for children 12 and under. The release says BC Transit’s operational funding has increased by more than 80 per cent since 2017, and notes service expansions in Nanaimo, Victoria and Kelowna in 2026.
“The BC Conservatives don’t have a plan to deal with infrastructure needs in Surrey or the Fraser Valley,” the release states, claiming the Conservatives would slash public transit funding and reduce service to cut the deficit. Apna News has not independently verified the Conservative position on transit funding.
