A first-time candidate beats a cabinet minister

Purewal, a first-time provincial candidate, began his working life in uniform, serving as a Military Police member with the Canadian Armed Forces. He went on to build a career in business, owning and managing companies including a property restoration business, and his campaign biography credits him with more than 20 years of experience in business leadership, public service and community involvement, including time as a leader in youth sports. His campaign ran on public safety, responsible government, economic opportunity and effective public policy.

Brar, the province’s Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals, had represented the area in the legislature for most of the past two decades. The BC NDP has held Surrey-Fleetwood, apart from one term, since 2009, and Brar first won the seat in 2009 and held it again from 2017. In 2024 he kept the riding with 9,923 votes (48.6%), just 751 votes ahead of Conservative Avtar Gill at 9,172 (44.9%), which made Surrey-Fleetwood one of Surrey’s tightest ridings heading into Saturday’s vote. Purewal more than doubled that Conservative margin.

What the result means for Fleetwood

Fleetwood residents will now be represented by an MLA on the government benches, but from a new party. The change puts the riding’s biggest provincial files in Conservative hands: the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension along Fraser Highway, which runs through the heart of Fleetwood, school construction in one of Surrey’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods, the Surrey Memorial Hospital expansion, and provincial funding for the Surrey Police Service transition. The Conservatives campaigned on income tax cuts, faster housing approvals and expanded child care, and Fleetwood’s commuters, trades workers and small business owners will be watching the new government’s first budget closely.

Conservatives form a majority government

Fleetwood’s flip is part of a provincewide change of government. As of 10:46 p.m. PT, Elections BC’s preliminary results showed the Conservatives leading in 64 of 93 districts, the BC NDP leading in 27 and the BC Greens leading in 2. A party needs 47 seats for a majority, so the Conservative Party of BC will form a majority government under leader Lorne Doerkson, the party’s first majority in British Columbia in decades, ending nine years of BC NDP government.
