Google unveils Gemini agent for work: an AI coworker inside Gmail and Docs

Google says Gemini is becoming a single, universal agent for work: one prompt box that answers questions, handles knowledge work, creates images and media, and writes and runs code. According to the Google Cloud post “Gemini at Work 2026: Introducing Gemini agent,” adapted from CEO Thomas Kurian’s keynote on October 8, 2026, the agent works inline across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar, carrying the same memory, skills and controls across them.Instead of giving it step by step instructions, Google says users give the agent objectives. It plans the work, picks its skills and tools, connects to company systems, and returns finished work. Google says it is reachable from any device and channel, from the command line to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack and third party apps, and it can spin up temporary sub agents with their own identities for multi step tasks that run for hours or days. For each job, Google says the agent picks the best model for the task, drawing on the Gemini family plus Anthropic’s Claude models, with more models to be added. Cost controls include multi model orchestration, Smart Routing and real time spend caps. On the security side, Google lists identity and policy management, authorization and permission controls, secure sandboxing and network gateways. Google also says industry specific agents for financial services and legal are in preview, with government, healthcare and retail coming. Kurian said in the post that nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers use its AI products. For Surrey’s immigrant owned small businesses, the ones where the owner drafts quotes in Docs, chases invoices from a Gmail thread and lives in Calendar, this could one day matter. If the agent worked the way Google describes, a quote drafted in Docs, a follow up composed from an email thread, or a week of messages summarized before a meeting would be a prompt away. That is potential, not a promise. What Google has actually said is coming is a gradual rollout, and every one of these scenarios depends on the product reaching the plan the agent is sold on.Status is important here. Google says the agent is in private preview right now. Wider availability for select Google Workspace Business and Enterprise plans is coming soon, but Google has not announced pricing or a general availability date. It is not something a small business can sign up for today.Source: Google Cloud blog, Oct 8, 2026.
