Surrey: Locke, Surrey Connect call for removal of diesel taxes for truckers

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and Surrey Connect are calling on the federal and provincial governments to remove all taxes on commercial diesel fuel.

In an October 2 announcement, Locke said high diesel costs are squeezing truckers and driving up prices for consumers, and that removing the taxes would lower costs and support jobs. Surrey Connect framed the call as especially urgent as Canadian businesses face ongoing pressure from American tariffs.

Locke also welcomed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s October 1 decision to designate the Pacific Link pipeline a project of national interest. Carney announced the designation in Fort McMurray, Alberta, alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. The proposed 1-million-barrel-per-day pipeline would run from Alberta to B.C.’s coast, with Canada and Alberta sharing ownership and Indigenous communities offered a minimum 10 per cent stake.
