VANCOUVER - A 48-year-old man from New Mexico has been charged after allegedly entering an East Vancouver home early Wednesday morning, where the resident woke to find a stranger going through her personal belongings, Vancouver police say.
Police say the man was found inside the home by the resident and was taken into custody at the scene after officers say he tried to climb out of a second-floor window. He remains in custody.
Woken at 3:45 a.m.
On October 21, 2026, at around 3:45 a.m., a woman was asleep in a residence near Atlin Street and East 29th Avenue when she awoke to find an unknown man reportedly rummaging through her personal belongings.
The woman pretended to be asleep until the man left the room, then locked her bedroom door and called the Vancouver Police Department. She reported that she lived with roommates and believed the man was still inside the home.
Arrest and charges
Officers responded quickly to the residence and located the suspect on the second floor. When they attempted to speak with him, he ran into a nearby bedroom. Officers observed him attempting to jump out of the window, and he was then taken into custody.
The suspect refused to identify himself. Officers located identification belonging to a resident of New Mexico and have since been able to confirm his identity.
Daniel Joseph Campbell, 48, has been charged with one count of break-and-enter and one count of obstructing a peace officer. Campbell remains in custody. The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
The release does not say how the man got into the home, or whether he had any connection to the home or its residents.
As a general practice, residents are reminded to lock doors and windows overnight, including on upper floors, and to keep a phone within reach while sleeping. Anyone who believes someone is inside their home should get to a locked room or leave if they can do so safely, and call police right away rather than confronting the person.
