KELOWNA, B.C. – The Conservative Party of BC is accusing the BC NDP of sending voters a partisan mailer dressed up to look like official election mail, and Premier David Eby defended the tactic when reporters pressed him on it in Kelowna on Tuesday.
According to the Conservative release, the envelope arriving in mailboxes reads “ELECTION 2026: You Decide,” “VOTING INFORMATION ENCLOSED” and “TIME SENSITIVE – OPEN IMMEDIATELY,” with nothing on the outside identifying it as NDP material. The party says the enclosed letter discloses that it is from the BC NDP only in the smallest print at the bottom of page two.
The mailer is landing in mailboxes in the middle of the provincial campaign, as Elections BC vote-by-mail packages are also being delivered ahead of the Saturday, October 24 vote.
At a Kelowna press conference on Tuesday, a reporter asked Eby whether the letter was ethical. According to the partial transcript included in the Conservative release, Eby replied: “Well, we use a variety of tools to talk to British Columbians. Direct mailers, radio ads, internet ads, press conferences. It is hard to reach people on such important issues like the election.”
The Conservatives were not satisfied with the answer. “This letter is unmistakably meant to mislead and confuse voters,” said Brennan Day, the Conservative candidate in Courtenay-Comox. “David Eby had a chance to repudiate these sleazy tactics, but instead he defended the indefensible.”
“David Eby’s desperation is showing,” Day added. “He is making clear the depths the NDP will go to mislead voters to try and save his political skin.”
The accusation comes four days before British Columbians vote on October 24, in an election Eby called two years ahead of schedule.
