Elections BC counted 15,277 valid votes in Surrey-Guildford. Thind’s margin of 1,472 votes is a decisive break from the riding’s last result: in 2024, Begg held the seat by just 22 votes over the Conservative candidate, a margin confirmed by judicial recount and the smallest winning margin in British Columbia that year.
From the school board to Victoria
Thind, who has called Surrey home for more than 27 years, has served as a Surrey School Board trustee since 2014 and is currently the board’s vice-chair. On the board he has chaired committees including the Learning Liaison Committee, Traditional Schools and the Budget Committee. He is a past president of the Rotary Club of Surrey, leads the B.C. region of the Pingalwara Society of Ontario charity, and has helped raise more than $5.4 million for charitable and community causes since 2002. He works full-time as a Realtor with Century 21 Coastal Realty in Surrey.
This was not Thind’s first provincial run: in 2020 he carried the BC Liberal banner in Surrey-Fleetwood, finishing second to the NDP’s Jagrup Brar. His 2026 campaign was built on a real path to home ownership, family doctors for every British Columbian, and safer streets. Begg, the defeated incumbent, had represented Surrey-Guildford for the NDP in the last Parliament.
What it means for Guildford residents
Surrey-Guildford covers the Guildford and Fraser Heights neighbourhoods in north Surrey, and its voters now send an MLA to Victoria who sits with the governing party. That puts Guildford’s biggest files on the new government’s desk: school capacity in one of Canada’s fastest-growing school districts, a file Thind knows first-hand from 12 years on the school board; the Highway 1 corridor and the daily commute through Guildford; growth and redevelopment pressure around Guildford Town Centre; and access to family doctors and health care for the riding’s fast-growing population. Guildford families will be watching the new government’s first budget to see what a Conservative majority delivers for Surrey classrooms, roads and clinics.
Conservatives form a majority government
Thind’s win is part of a province-wide Conservative victory. As of 10:46 p.m. PT, Elections BC’s preliminary results showed the Conservative Party of BC leading in 64 of 93 districts, the BC NDP leading in 27 and the BC Green Party in 2. A party needs 47 seats for a majority, and the Conservatives, led into the election by interim leader Lorne Doerkson, will form a majority government, ending nine years of BC NDP government. Conservative candidates led in all 10 Surrey ridings late Saturday night.
