Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, second straight monthly decline

Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, according to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey released October 9, in figures highlighted by the BC NDP.

Adrian Dix, the BC NDP candidate for Vancouver-Renfrew, said in an October 9 statement: “Across the country we are seeing the impact of Trump’s trade war with 68,000 jobs lost nationally.”

According to the party’s statement, September was the second straight month of national job losses, following 42,000 in August, and the national unemployment rate now stands at 6.5 per cent.

A softening job market hits Surrey students and newcomers hardest, and the figures land in the middle of the provincial campaign, where both parties are pitching jobs plans to voters.
