HOUSTON, B.C. - Seven years to the day after Laureen Fabian walked out of her home and vanished, her family is renewing its plea for information, and the RCMP unit now in charge of the case is asking anyone who knows anything to come forward.
Laureen (Campbell) Fabian left her home in Houston, in B.C.’s northwest interior, on foot at about 12:30 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2019, heading out for a walk, as she had many times before. She did not return. An extensive ground and air search by the RCMP and local Search and Rescue teams found no trace of her.
On this seventh anniversary, her daughter, Catrina Andrews, has recorded a video plea, released by the RCMP with this appeal:
Video: Catrina Andrews appeals for information about her mother, Laureen Fabian, in a message released by Houston RCMP on the seventh anniversary of her disappearance.
She was 69 years old at the time of her disappearance. Police describe her as a Caucasian woman, 5 feet 4 inches (163 cm) tall and 143 pounds (65 kg), with brown eyes and short, grey hair. The photos police released with this appeal were taken earlier, and police note her hair is not as pictured in them.
A case now with Major Crime
The investigation continues, and conduct of the file has passed to the RCMP’s North District Major Crime Unit, the team that handles the region’s most serious and long-running cases. That a dedicated major-crime unit holds the file seven years on underlines that police have not closed the book on what happened to her. The Houston RCMP file number is 2019-2391.
Families in cases like this one live with a particular kind of loss: no answers, no confirmation, and a date on the calendar that returns every year. Anniversaries are also when cases move, because renewed attention brings forward the person who saw something small in 2019 and has thought about it since.
How to help
Anyone with information about Laureen Fabian’s disappearance, however minor it may seem, is asked to contact the Houston RCMP detachment at 250-845-3069, or their local police. Houston is a small community on Highway 16 west of Burns Lake, and walkers, drivers and hunters who were in the area on October 28, 2019 are among those police most want to hear from.
Apna News covers appeals like this one from across British Columbia because missing-person cases are solved by reach: the person holding the missing detail is rarely the person the police expect. If you know someone who lived in or travelled through the Houston area in the fall of 2019, sharing this story with them is the most useful thing a reader can do.
