SURREY, B.C. - OpenAI’s most advanced AI models are about to get easier for British Columbia businesses to buy. OpenAI announced on October 21 that it is partnering with Google Cloud to bring its frontier models, along with Codex, its agentic coding tool, into Google Cloud’s Model Garden, with general availability planned in the coming weeks.
One catalogue, more model choice
Model Garden is Google Cloud’s built-in catalogue of AI models, where a business can pick a model, connect it to its own data and run it without leaving its Google Cloud account. Until now, that catalogue has centred on Google’s own Gemini family and models from other providers. Adding OpenAI means a Surrey software agency or a BC logistics firm already running on Google Cloud will soon be able to test OpenAI models side by side with the rest, inside the environment its team already uses.
OpenAI says the integration gives customers native access to its models to power complex agentic workflows at scale, the kind of multi-step work where an AI system plans and carries out a sequence of actions rather than answering a single question. Codex, OpenAI’s agentic workflow tool for software teams, is part of the package, aimed at helping enterprises modernize how they build and maintain applications.
Built for regulated industries
For organizations in regulated industries, OpenAI says deploying AI requires control over who can access sensitive data and how it is used. The Google Cloud integration pairs the models with Google Cloud’s built-in access controls and centralized data governance, which matters for BC health, legal and financial firms that cannot simply send client data to a new platform.
Buying is designed to be simple. Google Cloud customers will be able to purchase OpenAI frontier models through the Google Cloud Marketplace, and enterprises with existing Google Cloud spend commitments will be able to draw down those commitments for the purchases rather than signing a separate contract.
OpenAI models will also soon be available in Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, providing enterprise customers with model choice flexibility and the ability to pick the best model for each task.
What it means in Surrey
For Surrey startups, agencies and IT teams already on Google Cloud, the practical change is choice without a migration. A team can keep its data, billing and security settings where they are, and still evaluate OpenAI models for customer support, document processing or software development.
Two caveats are worth noting. General availability is planned for the coming weeks, and businesses can request access now through Google Cloud. And the deal does not change OpenAI’s existing cloud home: Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner.
