Trevor Halford: The Former Interim Leader Fighting to Hold Surrey-White Rock

SURREY, B.C. - Few names on the October 24 ballot have had a year like Trevor Halford. The Surrey-White Rock MLA has been his party’s interim leader, the Leader of the Opposition, an independent, and now, again, the Conservative candidate asking his neighbours to re-elect him.

Halford was born and raised in Surrey. He attended Elgin Park Secondary School in South Surrey and graduated from Trinity Western University with a degree in political science. He and his wife Holly are raising their three children in the same community where he grew up, and he volunteers as a coach in the parks, fields and rinks he played in as a kid.

He has represented Surrey-White Rock in the legislature since 2020. First elected as a BC Liberal, in the party that later became BC United, he crossed the floor to the BC Conservatives in September 2024. Two months later, voters re-elected him under his new banner with 14,667 votes (52.3 per cent), ahead of the NDP’s Darryl Walker at 12,699 (45.3 per cent). In the legislature, he has served as shadow minister for transportation and infrastructure, ICBC and affordability, BC Transit and sport, and previously held the mental health and addictions and TransLink portfolios.

Then came the party’s turbulent year. Halford became interim leader of the Conservatives and Leader of the Opposition in December 2025 after John Rustad stepped down. In September 2026, after calling on Rustad’s successor Kerry-Lynne Findlay to resign, he was removed from the Conservative caucus and sat as an independent. He has since returned to the fold: Elections BC lists Halford as the Conservative candidate for Surrey-White Rock on the October 24 ballot.

His main challenger is a familiar face. Darryl Walker, the former White Rock mayor who lost to Halford in 2024 by 1,968 votes, is running again for the NDP, setting up a rematch in a riding long held by the centre-right. They are joined by BC Green candidate Christine Kinnie, CentreBC’s Waqas Rana, OneBC’s Amanda James and independent Kevin Diakiw, a former Surrey journalist.

“We also need to stand up against the NDP government,” Halford has said, arguing the community needs a voice fighting for it in Victoria.

Advance voting in Surrey-White Rock runs October 16 to 21, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Elk’s Lodge Hall 431 and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church (all six days), and at Bayridge Elementary School (October 16 to 18). The district electoral office is at 15165 Russell Avenue in White Rock. General voting day is Saturday, October 24.
