VANCOUVER, B.C. - A 45-year-old woman is dead after she was struck by an SUV while crossing Main Street at National Avenue in a marked crosswalk just after midnight on Sunday, October 25, 2026, and Vancouver police are again urging everyone on the road to take extra care.

The Vancouver Police Department said in a news release issued Tuesday, October 27, 2026, that the woman is the second pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the city within just a few days.

What happened at Main Street and National Avenue

The woman was crossing Main Street at National Avenue at a marked crosswalk just after midnight on Sunday when a southbound SUV struck her, police said. She was thrown approximately 30 metres by the impact.

Police, paramedics and fire crews responded, and the VPD’s Accident Investigation Unit was also called in. The woman had suffered significant injuries, and resuscitation measures were performed at the scene, but she was pronounced dead just before 1:00 a.m. on Sunday.

It was dark and raining heavily at the time. Police said it is not yet clear whether the woman was crossing with a walk signal.

Driver stayed at the scene, investigation continues

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, the VPD said. Alcohol and substance use are not believed to be factors in the incident.

Police have not requested any charges, and the collision remains under investigation.

Second pedestrian struck in Vancouver within days

Three days before the fatal collision, on Thursday, October 22, a seven-year-old girl was injured when she was hit by a vehicle at East Pender Street and Victoria Drive. She was released from hospital with minor injuries.

Apna News reported on that incident last week, when the VPD issued a seasonal warning that less daylight means more caution is needed on the roads. Tuesday’s release is the department’s second such warning in four days.

Why police keep repeating the warning

Fall in Metro Vancouver brings shorter days, darker commutes and heavy rain, and police say visibility becomes more challenging for both pedestrians and drivers. A pedestrian in dark clothing on a wet road can be nearly invisible to a driver until the last moment, and a driver travelling at city speed needs many metres of clear road to stop.

The VPD is the municipal police service for the City of Vancouver, and its Accident Investigation Unit examines the city’s most serious collisions, including every fatal crash, to determine exactly what happened. Its findings in this case will decide whether any charges are recommended.

For Surrey and Lower Mainland readers who drive or walk in Vancouver, the message from police is the same one they delivered last week: slow down, watch crosswalks closely in the dark and rain, and never assume the other person has seen you.
