CRESTON, B.C. - Creston RCMP are warning residents and businesses to lock up their fuel, after an increase in reports of fuel thefts throughout the Creston Valley.
Officers have recently responded to several incidents involving gasoline and diesel being stolen from vehicles, particularly work trucks. In some cases, police say, thieves have targeted auxiliary fuel storage tanks, commonly known as tidy tanks, the portable tanks many contractors, farmers and work crews use to refuel equipment on site.
“Fuel theft can have a significant financial impact on residents, businesses, contractors, and farmers who rely on their vehicles and equipment every day,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, Media Relations Officer for the BC RCMP. “While officers continue to investigate these incidents, we encourage vehicle owners to take steps to reduce opportunities for thieves.”
How police say you can protect your fuel
Creston RCMP recommend that vehicle and equipment owners:
- Park vehicles in locked compounds, garages, or secure areas whenever possible;
- Park in well-lit locations;
- Use security cameras or motion-activated lighting;
- Use locking fuel caps and other anti-theft devices;
- Regularly check vehicles and fuel tanks for signs of tampering; and
- Report suspicious activity to police immediately.
Police say the investigations into the recent thefts are continuing. Anyone who observes suspicious activity around parked vehicles, equipment, fuel tanks, or work sites is encouraged to contact the Creston RCMP.
