NANAIMO, B.C. - A man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death nearly a year after a pedestrian was struck and killed while walking along Island Highway North in Nanaimo.
Nanaimo RCMP said in a news release issued Tuesday, October 27, 2026, that Mahadi Redwan was struck and killed on November 2, 2025, while walking along Island Highway North.
Charge laid after an 11-month investigation
A comprehensive investigation by the Nanaimo RCMP General Investigation Section identified a suspect, police said.
On October 21, 2026, Wael Hmaied was charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death under the Criminal Code of Canada, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Dangerous driving causing death is the Criminal Code offence that applies when the way a person drives causes another person’s death. The charge against Hmaied has not been proven in court.
Surrender and court date
Hmaied turned himself in to police on October 26, 2026. He was later released with several conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on November 10, 2026.
Police thanked the public and their partner agencies for their assistance throughout the investigation, and credited frontline officers, specialized investigative units and civilian staff for advancing the case to court.
Because the matter is now before the courts, police said no further information will be released at this time.
Pedestrian deaths in focus this week
The charge was announced in the same week that a 45-year-old woman was killed crossing Main Street in Vancouver, the second pedestrian struck in that city in a matter of days. Police across British Columbia are urging drivers and pedestrians to take extra care on the roads as fall darkness and heavy rain reduce visibility.
