ATLANTA, Ga. - Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand met with her Mexican and French counterparts on October 31, 2026, on the margins of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, in two bilateral meetings Global Affairs Canada reported the same day.
Anand met with Roberto Velasco Álvarez, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, to discuss bilateral cooperation, regional security, and shared priorities. She welcomed the progress made during the first year of the Canada-Mexico Action Plan and said she looks forward to welcoming Mexico to Canada for the annual meeting under the Canada-Mexico Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at the end of November. She also highlighted opportunities to deepen energy and commercial cooperation.
Anand and Velasco agreed that the Gang Suppression Force in Haiti presents a significant opportunity to improve security conditions on the ground. The two reaffirmed the strong partnership between Canada and Mexico and committed to continued collaboration on shared bilateral, regional, and global priorities.
Anand also met with Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, on the margins of the same G20 meeting, held in Atlanta from October 30 to 31, 2026. The ministers reaffirmed the close Canada-France relationship and discussed how their countries can work together through the G7, La Francophonie, the G20, NATO, and other multilateral institutions, including cooperation on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Building on the momentum of the Canada-EU Summit in Montréal, the ministers discussed France’s role in advancing the Canada-EU partnership, including efforts to deliver concrete results on energy security and regional cooperation. On Ukraine, they reaffirmed support for a just and lasting peace consistent with the UN Charter, emphasized sustaining military and other assistance to Ukraine, and maintaining coordinated pressure on Russia. They also discussed United States-led peace efforts, the humanitarian situation in the Middle East, regional stability, and the importance of protecting civilians.
Anand and Barrot said they look forward to continuing discussions at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on November 9 and 10, in Marseille, France. Neither readout announces a new agreement or commitment; both record meetings held and positions restated.
