MONTRÉAL, Que. - Canada and the European Union have concluded negotiations for a Canada-EU digital trade agreement, the first agreement of its kind for Canada, Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu said October 31, 2026, on the margins of the Canada-EU Summit in Montréal.
Sidhu met with Maroš Šefčovič, the European Union’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, for the third time this month on the margins of the summit, held in Montréal from October 29 to 30, 2026. The two welcomed the successful conclusion of the negotiations, which Global Affairs Canada says will modernize the bilateral trade framework for the digital economy.
The agreement will complement the benefits already provided by the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, and help businesses on both sides of the Atlantic compete and grow in an increasingly digital global marketplace, according to the October 31 statement.
The digital trade conclusion follows the broader Canada-EU Alliance for the Future announced at the same summit on October 30. Sidhu and Šefčovič discussed the strong Canada-EU partnership and their shared commitment to advancing the summit’s outcomes, and committed to building on that momentum.
Sidhu also welcomed the growing defence industrial cooperation between Canada and the EU, noting the new contract awarded to the Canadian defence technology company Galvion under the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument. The October 31 statement gives no dollar figure for that contract.
Sidhu and Šefčovič will meet next at the upcoming Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership-EU ministerial dialogue in Hanoi, Vietnam. No date for that meeting is given in the statement, and the text of the digital trade agreement itself has not been published.
