BC Hydro is doubling the Team Power Smart Reduction Challenge reward to $100 for eligible residential customers, and tripling it to $150 for income-qualified customers, for a limited time. Customers earn the bill credit by reducing their electricity use by 10 per cent.

How the challenge works

Eligible customers have 12 months to reduce their electricity use by 10 per cent compared with the previous year. Customers who complete the challenge receive a $100 bill credit, double the standard $50 reward. Income-qualified customers receive $150, triple the standard reward. BC Hydro says the $150 credit is its first-ever triple reward through the challenge and the largest it has offered to income-qualified customers.

What the savings add up to

Customers who complete the challenge save twice: through lower electricity use and through the bill credit.

Small changes BC Hydro recommends

  • Turn down the heat and use a smart thermostat to lower heating automatically when asleep or away.
  • Use smaller cooking appliances, such as an air fryer, microwave, toaster oven or slow cooker, instead of the oven when possible.
  • Seal drafts around windows and doors to keep warm air inside.
  • Switch to LED lighting, which uses up to 75 per cent less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs.
  • Choose ENERGY STAR certified appliances and use available BC Hydro rebates.
  • Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators to reduce hot water use.
  • Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.

How to sign up

Eligible customers can sign up for the Reduction Challenge until January 15, 2027, through the new BC Hydro mobile app or through their online BC Hydro account. The app lets customers monitor their electricity use, see personalized energy-saving insights and track their progress toward the 10 per cent target. Team Power Smart members also get access to contests, offers, events and energy-saving advice, including Team Power Smart Members’ Day at Science World and Vancouver Rise FC matches.

For Surrey households heading into the winter heating season, the challenge pairs a lower bill every month with a credit at the end of it, and the income-qualified reward is the largest BC Hydro has put on the table through the program.
