Eby commits to new Surrey healthcare facility on city-offered land if re-elected

VANCOUVER - A re-elected NDP government would work with municipal leaders who have offered land to build a new healthcare facility in Surrey, BC NDP Leader David Eby said Tuesday.

“If the local government is offering land for sites to develop to deliver healthcare in this fast growing community, then of course, yes, we would work with them,” Eby said during a media availability.

The pledge builds on what the party describes as $12 billion in Surrey investments, including the first medical school in 50 years, new MRI machines and a CT scanner for Surrey Memorial Hospital, a new front-door triage team and Emergency Department Satellite Centre, a new hospital in Cloverdale, and expanded cardiac and dialysis services.

The NDP has also opened four Urgent and Primary Care Centres in Surrey and committed to build three more if re-elected.

“Surrey is on track to be the largest city in the province, and it’s a shame previous governments ignored the growth here,” said Garry Begg, the BC NDP candidate for Surrey-Guildford. “People deserve care close to home.”

Eby tied the promise to his proposed tax increases on high earners, saying the revenue would fund healthcare delivery. The announcement came as a Conservative candidate said healthcare would “take the brunt” of spending cuts under a Conservative government.
