SURREY, B.C. - Renewing an Indian passport from Surrey runs through a specific pipeline, and most delays happen at predictable points: the wrong photo, the wrong police station on the form, or booking travel before the verification step clears. The Consulate General of India in Vancouver sets the rules; here is the route, in order.

Where the application actually goes

The Consulate directs applicants to its authorized service provider: applications are submitted through BLS International Services Canada, and queries about procedure go to BLS as well. Printed passports are sent back to BLS centres for dispatch to the applicant. The Vancouver consulate’s jurisdiction covers Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories, and you must have a Canadian address proof inside that jurisdiction. The application itself is the online form on the Government of India’s Passport Seva portal for embassies and consulates, and the form requires one Indian address and one Canadian address.

The details that cause delays

The photograph is a classic failure point: a recent photo, 2 inches by 2 inches, with a plain white background, pasted on the application form, with clothing in colours that contrast with the background for clarity. The second is police verification. The Consulate states plainly that processing time depends on the availability of a clear police verification report from the concerned authority in India, and it instructs applicants to make sure the police station named in the application is the one under whose jurisdiction the Indian address falls. A wrong station name can quietly stall an application while everything else looks complete. Permanent residents should also note the Consulate’s instruction to include a copy of the landing paper with the application.

Timing, honestly stated

An ordinary Indian passport is valid for ten years, and a re-issue application can be submitted from one year before expiry, which is the single easiest delay-avoider available: you do not have to wait until the passport is nearly dead. The Consulate publishes no fixed processing time, and any agent or website promising an exact number of weeks is guessing; the honest variable is the police verification. Fees once paid are not refundable, which is one more reason to get the form right the first time.

What it means for you

Start at the one-year mark, use the Passport Seva form, double-check the police station against your Indian address, get the 2-by-2 white-background photo done properly, and do not book non-refundable travel against an assumed delivery date. The Consulate’s passport services page and BLS are the authorities; this guide is the map, not the office.
