QUESNEL, B.C. - Quesnel RCMP are asking witnesses and anyone with dash camera footage to come forward after a man died in a hit-and-run collision on Highway 97 south earlier this month, a case that began as a report of a man sitting at the side of the road.
Shortly before 3:00 a.m. on October 5, 2026, officers were called to Highway 97 south near Yellow Market in Quesnel for a report of a man sitting on the side of the road. The man was taken to hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries, but he later died in hospital.
Investigators have since determined that the man died from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run. Police say he was struck by a red 2023 Volvo tractor-trailer. The vehicle has since been located, and the driver has also been identified. Police have not named the victim.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this distressing time,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, BC RCMP Spokesperson for Northern B.C.
More than two weeks after the collision, police say witnesses and video could still be key to the investigation. Investigators want to hear from anyone who was driving on Highway 97 south near Yellow Market in the early hours of October 5, anyone who saw the man at the side of the road, and anyone with dash camera footage from that stretch of highway between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. that morning.
Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact the Quesnel RCMP non-emergency line at 250-992-9211. The Quesnel RCMP file number for the investigation is 2026-7935.
The investigation is ongoing.
