VANCOUVER, B.C. - A 34-year-old man remains in custody after Vancouver police officers on patrol watched two tourists from Calgary get assaulted near Gastown on Wednesday night and moved in to arrest the suspect on the spot.
The officers were on routine patrol at about 11 p.m. on October 21 when they witnessed an altercation between a suspect and two people near Abbott and West Cordova streets, the Vancouver Police Department said in a media release issued October 22. Abbott and West Cordova streets sit in the Gastown neighbourhood, at the eastern edge of downtown Vancouver. The officers intervened immediately and safely handcuffed the suspect.
According to police, the two victims were tourists visiting from Calgary who were walking back from the Bruno Mars concert. The suspect allegedly punched the male victim on the arm with a sharp object, believed to be glass. The force of that contact pushed the female victim into a nearby light pole.
The male victim sustained a cut to his left forearm. He was treated at the scene by paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services. Police have not released the names or ages of the two victims.
Police identified the suspect as Derek Dale Driscoll, 34. Driscoll had two outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest, one in relation to an alleged breach of a probation order and one for failing to attend court.
Driscoll was arrested, transported to jail, and has now been charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm, and assault with a weapon. He remains in custody while he awaits a bail hearing.
The charges against Driscoll, and the allegation behind the probation-related warrant, have not been proven in court.
