WHITE ROCK, B.C. - White Rock Fire Rescue is warning residents, business owners and property managers to take extra care with dumpsters and outdoor waste containers after an increase in dumpster fires across the community.
The City of White Rock posted the safety reminder on November 5, 2026, after firefighters responded to a rising number of dumpster fires in the city.
“Dumpster fires can present a risk of structural extension when placed too close to buildings, vehicles, or overhangs,” said Fire Chief Brad Davie. “We are reminding the public to take proactive steps to secure dumpsters and other outdoor waste containers to help protect their property and reduce fire risk.”
White Rock Fire Rescue recommends keeping dumpster lids closed and locked, and placing dumpsters at least 10 feet away from buildings, vegetation and other combustible materials. Dumpsters should not be placed directly under windows, doors or other building openings, and should be stored in well-lit areas where they do not block fire lane access.
The department also warns against putting hazardous materials in dumpsters, because they can release toxic substances if ignited, and against discarding cigarettes or other smoking materials in them.
If you see a dumpster fire, call 9-1-1. If it is safe to do so, close the lid to help limit oxygen to the fire, then move away and avoid breathing in smoke, which may contain harmful materials. Do not expose yourself to smoke, heat or flames.
