Surrey council approves $1-per-year lease for REACH autism centre in Newton, opening early 2027

SURREY, B.C. – Surrey council has approved a five-year lease at $1 per year for the REACH Child and Youth Development Society to open a Centre for Autism at 7010 King George Blvd., with doors expected to open in early 2027.

The site is the former Newton Animal Hospital, city-owned land that will be repurposed for autism services. The appraisal puts market rent at $83,315 per year, which makes the lease an in-kind city contribution of $416,575 over the five-year term.

A Centre for Autism is a dedicated facility offering assessments, behavioural intervention, speech-language and occupational therapy, counselling, respite care and parent education for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder.

The centre will serve Surrey families who currently travel outside the city for some specialized services. Council supported the lease as a way to expand local access to developmental services in Newton.

Council’s approval of the lease terms is confirmed from council reporting. Readers should check with the City of Surrey for the final opening date, as renovation and licensing timelines can shift before the early 2027 target.

The five-year term gives REACH a stable home while the city retains ownership of the land. The society will operate the centre and deliver the full range of services listed above.

What happens next: REACH will prepare the building for its early 2027 opening. Apna News will update this story when the city confirms the official opening date.
