TORONTO, Ont. - Apple has unveiled its first touchscreen Mac, a new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR Display and Touch, in 14-inch and 16-inch models powered by the company’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
Apple announced the new MacBook Pro on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. It is available to pre-order now, with availability beginning Friday, November 6, 2026.
The headline change is Touch on the Mac for the first time. Apple says users can scroll with a swipe, pinch to zoom in on a photo, drag and drop slides between presentations, and double-tap a window to fill the screen. The touch sensor is built directly into the display panel rather than layered on top of it, which Apple says reduces latency. A redesigned hinge adds stability while using Touch, and the Dynamic Island comes to the Mac for the first time, as the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI.
The display itself uses tandem OLED technology, which Apple calls PROLED XDR. It offers up to 2000 nits peak HDR and SDR brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a 120Hz variable refresh rate, and a colour gamut covering both P3 and Adobe RGB. Apple positions it as a reference-calibre display for photographers, colourists, filmmakers and designers working on the go.
Both models are thinner and lighter than before. The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds and the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds, with screen sizes of 14.2 inches and 16.3 inches respectively. Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours. The machines offer up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and run macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.
Canadian pricing starts at $3,999 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and $4,799 for the 16-inch model with M5 Pro. Models with M5 Max start at $6,299 for the 14-inch and $6,599 for the 16-inch. Education pricing is also available. Apple says the M5 Max can run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on device, a point that will matter to AI developers and researchers weighing a portable workstation.
For readers considering an upgrade, the practical question is whether the touchscreen and the new display are worth the premium over the previous MacBook Pro generation. Apple is pitching this machine at professionals whose work is visual or AI-heavy, not at casual buyers, and the starting prices reflect that.
