DELTA - The Delta Board of Education held its inaugural meeting on November 3, 2026, swearing in two new trustees and electing Joe Muego as Chairperson and Ammen Dhillon as Vice-Chairperson for the upcoming year, the Delta School District announced November 4, 2026.
Two trustees, Tamara Laza and Jesse Bierman, were sworn in for the first time, alongside five returning trustees: Erica Beard, Ammen Dhillon, Masako Gooch, Joe Muego and Val Windsor. The ceremony took place at the Delta School Board offices on Harvest Drive in Ladner.
As the first order of business of their four-year term, the Delta Board of Education selected a new Chair and Vice Chair. Trustee Joe Muego, who has served on the Board since 2022, was elected to serve as Chairperson of the seven-member board for the upcoming year. This will be his third year serving as Chairperson.
Trustee Ammen Dhillon, who has served on the Board since 2022, was elected to the role of Vice-Chairperson for the upcoming year. This will be her second year serving as Vice-Chairperson. The Board of Education Chair and Vice-Chair are elected annually. The next Public Board Meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 8.
While an architect by profession, as a trustee Joe Muego is passionate about fostering connected educational environments that prepare students to meaningfully contribute to their communities. As a champion of parent engagement, he served in many executive PAC positions over 15 years. His service carried over to the Delta District PAC where he sat as vice-chair and ultimately chair, representing parents of all 31 public schools in Delta. Since being elected to the Board in 2022, he has served on the BC School Trustees Association Provincial Council, been a member of the Delta Council and Delta Board of Education Liaison Committee, and chaired the school district’s Audit Committee.
Dr. Ammen Dhillon is a registered clinical counsellor and mother with a passion for fostering school environments where students can flourish academically and emotionally. Before becoming a clinical counsellor, Ammen, who holds a PhD from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at UBC, was a biotech research scientist for 20 years, investigating new treatments for a range of chronic and infectious diseases. Elected to the board in 2022, she has also served on the district’s Inclusive Learning Advisory Committee for the past three years.
For Surrey families, Delta’s school board decisions matter because the two districts share a border, families move between them, and many Surrey students attend programs and events across the boundary. Delta’s board, like Surrey’s, begins a new four-year term this month, and the two boards will face many of the same pressures: enrolment growth, classroom space, and support for students in fast-growing neighbourhoods.
