VICTORIA - The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia is investigating whether the British Columbia Crime Stoppers Society took adequate steps to protect personal information gathered from people who reported tips in B.C., the office announced November 3, 2026.

Under the Personal Information Protection Act, the OIPC has jurisdiction over organizations, including non-profits, that collect, use and disclose the personal information of people living in British Columbia. Organizations are required under the Act to make reasonable security arrangements to protect personal information that they hold.

Due to the sensitive nature of the personal information held by Crime Stoppers, individuals do not need to complain to the OIPC if they believe they have been affected by the breach.

As this is an active file before the office, the OIPC is not able to provide further information. The office has resources available for organizations and individuals who experience a privacy breach, including a privacy breach checklist for organizations and guidance on recovering from identity theft in B.C.

For Surrey, the investigation carries a direct local connection. Surrey residents report tips to Crime Stoppers, including through the Surrey Police Service, and the question at the heart of the investigation is whether the personal information of those tipsters was adequately protected. Anyone who reported a tip and is concerned does not need to file a complaint with the OIPC to be covered by the investigation.
