VANCOUVER, B.C. - A man was stabbed in the abdomen while trying to recover his bicycle during a robbery on Commercial Drive late Wednesday night, and a 17-year-old youth has been charged, Vancouver Police say.
At approximately 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, the victim was with a friend and his bike was resting nearby when an unknown youth allegedly grabbed it and rode away, police said in a November 5 release. The victim chased the suspect and attempted to recover the bike, at which point the suspect allegedly stabbed him in the abdomen.
Vancouver Police were called shortly after the incident and located a suspect matching the description several blocks away, still allegedly in possession of the stolen bicycle. When officers attempted to arrest him, he was non-compliant, and officers deployed a bean bag shotgun (a less-lethal tool that fires soft projectiles) and took him into custody.
The victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, a 17-year-old youth, has been charged with one count of robbery and one count of assault with a weapon. The youth is not named in the release, and young persons charged with offences cannot be identified under Canadian youth justice law. The charges have not been proven in court.
Commercial Drive, known locally as The Drive, is the main commercial street of the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood in East Vancouver, busy with shops, cafes and transit well into the evening. Police have not released any further details.
