BURNABY, B.C. - Burnaby RCMP are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect in a package theft in South Burnaby, and are warning residents to guard against “porch piracy” as the holiday shopping season approaches.
The theft happened on September 28, 2026. Police have released surveillance images showing a hooded suspect in a blue jacket and dark pants beside a grey four-door sedan, and say the pairing of the distinct vehicle and the suspect’s clothing may help someone identify him.

“While we have not yet seen an increase in reported porch piracy, we are approaching that time of year,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj of the Burnaby RCMP. “These thieves often strike in broad daylight, looking for loot and plundering unattended packages in residential neighbourhoods.”
“We’re hoping that the distinct vehicle, coupled with the suspect’s clothing, will help someone identify this individual,” Cpl. Kalanj added. “Anyone that falls victim to porch piracy is reminded to always report it to police.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and quote file 2026-34807.
Police shared these tips to prevent package theft:
- Plan for deliveries: use tracking notifications to know exactly when a package arrives.
- Retrieve packages promptly: bring items inside as soon as they are delivered.
- Request secure delivery: ask couriers to require a signature, or have parcels delivered to an alternate secure pick-up location.
- Use security cameras: doorbell cameras and security systems can deter thieves and provide evidence if a theft occurs.
Porch piracy is a seasonal problem across Metro Vancouver, including in Surrey, where delivery volumes climb sharply in November and December. Burnaby RCMP say residents can also join or start a Block Watch on their street for community safety information.
