VANCOUVER, B.C. - Vancouver police are asking for the public’s help to find a 59-year-old man with dementia who walked away from his care home in South Vancouver on Wednesday morning and has not been seen since.
Maung Maung left the care home near Heather Street and West 57th Avenue at about 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, police said. He has dementia and speaks limited English. Police say he may be confused and could have trouble remembering how to get home.
Police issued the public appeal on Friday, October 23. By then, Mr. Maung had been missing for more than two days, and officers said they were requesting the public’s assistance to locate him.
Police describe Mr. Maung as a 59-year-old Asian man, five feet nine inches tall, with a medium build and short black hair that is greying. He was last seen wearing a grey button-up shirt, black pants and white runners. Police have released two photographs of him, including a surveillance image that shows the clothing he was last seen in, to help the public recognize him.

The care home he left is in a residential stretch of South Vancouver, between the Oakridge and Marpole neighbourhoods. Bus stops and the Canada Line are within walking distance, giving a man travelling on foot or by transit many routes out of the area.
The search extends well beyond that neighbourhood. Police say Mr. Maung has been known to travel long distances on foot or by transit. After more than two days on his own, he could be anywhere transit reaches in Metro Vancouver, including Burnaby, Richmond or Surrey. Transit riders and drivers across the region are asked to watch for a man matching his description and clothing.
Anyone who sees Mr. Maung is asked to call 911 right away and to stay with him until first responders arrive, police said.
