VANCOUVER, B.C. - A 15-year-old youth is recovering from minor injuries after an alleged dangerous driving incident involving approximately 25 e-scooter, e-bike and motorbike riders in Vancouver on Halloween night, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says.

VPD says several families flagged down officers in Kerrisdale, reporting that a group of approximately two dozen riders dressed in similar costumes were driving dangerously and almost hit them.

According to VPD, one responding patrol car was almost hit by a 15-year-old youth riding an e-dirt bike. The youth was allegedly travelling at 50 to 60 km/h, blew through multiple stop signs, and refused to stop for police before colliding with another vehicle. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

VPD notes that most e-dirt bikes are designed for off-road use and are not permitted on public streets and highways. The incident is being investigated by the VPD Collision Investigation Unit, and charges have not yet been recommended.

Why this matters beyond Kerrisdale

Halloween night puts more children and families on residential streets than almost any other evening of the year, and Kerrisdale families told officers the group nearly hit them. For Surrey and Lower Mainland parents, the details in this release are the ones police across the region keep repeating: high-powered e-dirt bikes are motorcycles in the eyes of the law, not bicycles, and most are illegal on public roads. A machine capable of 50 to 60 km/h in a residential neighbourhood, ridden through stop signs, leaves drivers and pedestrians with almost no time to react.

Police services across B.C. have raised concerns through the summer and fall about youths riding off-road e-bikes on city streets. This incident is now with the VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit, the specialized unit that investigates serious collisions, and VPD says no charges have been recommended at this stage. The youth is not being named, and Apna News is not publishing any identifying details.
