ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Abbotsford Police issued 944 violation tickets worth approximately $170,000 during four months of targeted traffic enforcement in and around Highway 1 construction zones, the department said on November 5.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit dedicated 80 operational shifts to construction zone enforcement between July and October 2026. The initiative, funded by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, focused on areas affected by the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Project, including the highway corridor and adjacent roadways.
The tickets covered speeding, speeding in construction zones, disobeying traffic control devices, distracted driving involving electronic devices, and other Motor Vehicle Act offences. Officers also removed 11 impaired drivers, impounded 36 vehicles for excessive speed, issued 11 driving suspensions, and arrested two prohibited drivers.
“Construction zones are high-risk environments where workers depend on drivers to follow traffic laws and remain alert,” said Sgt. Pat Kelly of the AbbyPD Traffic Enforcement Unit.

The Highway 1 widening through the Fraser Valley is one of the region’s largest road projects, and its construction zones sit on the main route between Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack, used daily by thousands of Fraser Valley commuters. Police are asking drivers to plan ahead, eliminate distractions, obey posted speed limits, and use extra caution in active construction zones, so workers get home safely at the end of their shift.
