OTTAWA, Ont. - The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a report of a sewing needle found inside a chocolate bar collected during Halloween trick-or-treating.
Police said the report came in on November 3, 2026, after a parent found the needle in a chocolate bar believed to have been collected in the Prince of Wales and Chinatown areas of the city. No injuries have been reported.
What police are asking
As a precaution, police are encouraging parents and caregivers to inspect their children’s Halloween candy before it is eaten, and to check packaging for signs of tampering, including small holes, tears or broken seals. Anyone who discovers suspicious candy is asked not to eat it and not to throw it away: keep the candy and its packaging and contact police at 613-236-1222, extension 7300.
Part of a wider Halloween pattern
Ottawa’s report followed a similar warning in Winnipeg, where police said on November 2, 2026, that two people had found straight pins inside mini chocolate bars, one reported in the Garden City neighbourhood and one in Royalwood.
About the Ottawa Police Service
The Ottawa Police Service is the municipal police service for Ottawa, Canada’s capital. It publishes community safety data through its Community Safety Data portal, and its non-emergency number is 613-236-1222. The candy collected on October 31 is still sitting in Ottawa homes, and police say a careful check before any of it is eaten is the safest step, because a needle inside a sealed-looking bar is easy to miss.
